Over the last three months I have been working on an e-commerce site for a Knivis Brand Owner. Yesterday the Brand Owner asked me what was the number one reason for e-commerce sites to fail. The question came about because his client was slow to get the catalog data for the site. I believe the number one reason is marketing or lack of it. Most small e-commerce site owners do not understand that if you build it they will not come. You need to market the site both web and traditional marketing. As the site go's live and there are no sales they blame the developer for lack of sales and it is downhill from there. So make sure your clients understand this and have a marketing budget for the site.
